A bronzed Mel Ott greets you in front of the Gretna Visitor Center and is shown holding his signature batting stance in front of the museum. Mel Ott was born in Gretna March 2, 1909 and leaped to fame in 1926 after leaving high school to join the New York Giants, making him the youngest ever to play major league baseball. In 1951, he was named to baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
